Bruno Guimaraes has officially joined Premier League champions Arsenal, completing a transfer from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £75 million ($101.2 million). The 28-year-old midfielder, who served as captain during his four-and-a-half-season tenure with the Magpies, expressed his ambition to “make history” with the Gunners.
While Arsenal did not disclose the specific terms of the “long-term” deal, British media outlets report that the agreement is a four-year contract with an option for an additional season. Guimaraes is the club’s most significant signing this window, joining other new arrivals Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.
Reflecting on his move, Guimaraes shared his excitement regarding his initial discussions with manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta. “Since the first time I spoke to Berta and Mikel I was excited,” he said, noting that he felt the need for a fresh challenge in his career following his experience in two World Cups.
Berta praised the acquisition, stating that Guimaraes strengthens the core of the team. He highlighted the player’s versatility as both a defensive and box-to-box midfielder, noting his consistent ability to contribute goals and assists. Berta added that the signing is intended to boost internal competition and support Arteta in evolving the team’s playing style.
The Brazilian midfielder departs Newcastle having scored 31 goals across 195 appearances. During his time under manager Eddie Howe, he played a pivotal role in the club’s 2025 League Cup victory—ending a 56-year major trophy drought—and helped the team secure two Champions League qualifications.
Guimaraes acknowledged the difficulty of his departure, describing it as one of the toughest decisions of his life. In a statement released by Newcastle, he expressed pride in the progress the club made during his time there, noting that he joined when the team was in a challenging position.
This transfer marks a long-standing interest from Arsenal, who were previously linked to the player in January 2022 before he moved from Lyon to Newcastle. Guimaraes is the third major departure from the northeast club this summer, following the exits of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
Arsenal, coming off a season where they ended a 22-year wait for a top-flight league title, are looking to maintain their high standards. Guimaraes emphasized his desire to win trophies, stating that he believes he is in the right environment to achieve his professional dreams.
“We have tough games to play this season so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams,” Guimaraes told the club’s media channels. He added that he feels “amazing” about the opportunity to represent the London side as he embarks on this new chapter.
