Former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has publicly responded to claims made by Jose Mourinho in his new Netflix docu-series, firing back with a veiled social media jab. The two have shared a strained history since a high-profile disagreement 11 years ago, which ultimately resulted in the doctor’s departure from Stamford Bridge. In her recent post, Carneiro teased an upcoming project, labeling it “a truly special one” and explicitly noting it is “not an old set piece,” signaling that her long-standing tension with the former Chelsea manager remains unresolved.
The controversy stems from a 2015 Premier League match against Swansea City, during which Mourinho directed a “daughter of a wh*re” remark toward Carneiro. In his recent documentary, Mourinho refused to offer an apology for the insult, arguing that such language is commonplace within football culture and suggesting that Carneiro overreacted because she was not a “football person.” Following the 2015 incident, Carneiro was immediately removed from first-team duties and left the club a month later. She subsequently took legal action against Chelsea for sexual discrimination and unfair dismissal, eventually securing a substantial settlement before stepping away from the public eye.
Beyond the conflict with Carneiro, Mourinho’s documentary also detailed his near-appointment as the manager of Manchester United. He revealed that he had been hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson to succeed him following the legendary manager’s 2013 retirement. Mourinho claimed he had initially agreed to the position after discussions with Ferguson, only to reverse his decision hours later. He ultimately contacted the United leadership to explain that he had already given his word to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, opting instead for a second stint at Stamford Bridge.
This decision marked the second time Chelsea had thwarted Manchester United’s plans during Mourinho’s tenure. The club previously intervened in the transfer of John Obi Mikel, successfully hijacking the move after the Nigerian midfielder had already completed trials at Old Trafford and been officially unveiled as a Manchester United player.
The pair were involved in a documented misunderstanding which eventually led the doctor to leave the club 11 years ago.
Carneiro had been dropped from first-team duties at Chelsea immediately after the incident at the start of the 2015-16 season.
