The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a landmark one-off T20 International match between India and Japan, scheduled for September 22. This historic fixture, which marks the first time the two nations will face each other in an international cricket match, will take place at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.
The match serves as the inaugural event for “Sport 75,” an initiative launched to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The program stems from a summit agreement between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, aimed at fostering human exchange and sports cooperation. The event also aligns with India’s long-term goal of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that the match represents a significant opportunity to expand cricket’s footprint in Japan and East Asia. Saikia emphasized the BCCI’s commitment to growing the sport beyond its traditional borders and thanked the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) for their partnership in organizing the event. He highlighted that the match is a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Naoki Miyaji, CEO of the Japan Cricket Association, described the visit of the reigning world champions as a monumental occasion for the sport in Japan. He extended an invitation to local fans to attend the match, expressing hope that the event would inspire curiosity and support for the Japanese team. The JCA and BCCI have pledged to continue working together to strengthen the development of cricket in Japan following this historic encounter.
