George Russell secured his third victory of the season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to take the checkered flag. The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line 0.196 seconds ahead of Verstappen, surviving two safety car periods that turned his comfortable lead into a narrow battle for survival. This win marks the eighth of Russell’s Formula 1 career and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June.
Reflecting on his performance, Russell expressed his satisfaction with the result. “It’s amazing to be back on the top step of the podium,” he stated. “Every race since the summer break I’ve gone from strength to strength and I feel more like myself again.” The win significantly impacts the drivers’ standings, allowing Russell to narrow the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 66 points with 15 rounds now complete.
Championship leader Antonelli faced a challenging weekend after a qualifying crash on Friday forced him to start 16th. His Saturday effort was a calculated recovery rather than the dramatic charge seen at Monza, eventually resulting in a fifth-place finish behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who took fourth. Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton followed in sixth. Charles Leclerc took fourth for Ferrari ahead of the 20-year-old Italian.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished third, marking a successful return to racing after missing three events due to a wrist injury. Hadjar, who recently secured a contract extension, stood on the podium alongside the top two finishers.
Rounding out the points, Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed seventh. Haas enjoyed a strong outing with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman taking eighth and ninth respectively, while Carlos Sainz secured the final points position in tenth for Williams. Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10 for Williams.
