New Zealand has officially recalled Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe, and Bella James for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia. This series, scheduled for later this month, serves as the team’s opening international assignment for the 2026-27 season and acts as key preparation for the inaugural 2027 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.
The returning quartet, who were not selected for the recent T20 World Cup, brings a mix of experience and future potential to the squad. Off-spinner Eden Carson makes her return following a lengthy recovery from elbow surgery that sidelined her since December of last year. Speaking on her comeback, Carson noted, “To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special. The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute.” She joins a spin unit captained by Amelia Kerr, alongside Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire. Who has 51 international caps, adds to a spin department that also includes captain Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire, the off-spinner.
The pace department is bolstered by the returns of Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe, a move necessitated by the international retirements of veterans Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu. Similarly, Bella James adds depth to the batting ranks following the departure of Suzie Bates. Preparation for these athletes has varied; Penfold recently participated in the KFC T20 Max competition for the Sandgate Redcliffe Gators, while both Rowe and James gained match experience with New Zealand A in Sri Lanka during the winter.
The squad faces a personnel setback as wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze is ruled out due to surgery on a persistent thumb injury. Gaze is currently targeting a return to the field in early 2027, with Polly Inglis stepping in to handle wicketkeeping duties for the Australia tour.
In the coaching setup, Dean Brownlie has been appointed as the interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s departure, having served as the team’s batting coach for the past four years. Reflecting on the squad composition, Brownlie expressed optimism: “We’re excited to welcome back Eden, Hannah, Molly, and Bella. There’s a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it’s going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side. Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets.”
The touring squad features: Amelia Kerr (captain), Eden Carson, Flora Devonshire, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis, Bella James, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, and Izzy Sharp.
