Bournemouth have expressed significant frustration regarding England’s handling of midfielder Alex Scott, who is now expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. The 23-year-old sustained a quadriceps issue while on international duty, a situation his club believes could have been managed more effectively.
Scott felt discomfort in his thigh before England’s 7-0 victory against Croatia on Saturday, yet he remained on the pitch for 70 minutes as part of a midfield pairing with Elliot Anderson. Despite being substituted, he has since withdrawn from the squad ahead of Tuesday’s Nations League match against the Czech Republic. Before his full debut four days later, after which Tuchel was effusive with his praise, scott made his England debut in the 2-0 win over the Czech Republic.
England manager Thomas Tuchel addressed the injury during his Monday news conference, describing the situation as “a strange one.” Tuchel maintained that the medical team received positive feedback from both the player and the staff prior to the Croatia game. “He trained in full, did extra work, and there were only green lights,” Tuchel stated. “When we noticed slight discomfort during the match and asked if he needed to come off, he said no. After the match, he insisted he could have played the full 90 minutes and felt no pain.”
The England boss emphasized that no unnecessary risks were taken, noting that Scott felt no injury even before undergoing a scan. Despite this, sources indicate that Bournemouth officials are unhappy, as they were aware of the underlying thigh issue before the midfielder’s involvement in the international fixture.
The injury complicates matters for Bournemouth, who are already dealing with a shortage of fit players. Scott joins forward Eli Junior Kroupi on the club’s injury list, as the 20-year-old continues his recovery from a foot problem sustained during the pre-season. The Cherries currently sit 17th in the Premier League, struggling for form as they remain winless through five matches with three draws and two defeats.
The impact of Scott’s absence will be felt over the next month, as Bournemouth face a demanding schedule including nine matches between 10 October and 8 November. Beyond their league commitments, they are scheduled to play consecutive mid-week matches against Sturm Graz, AC Milan, and Sparta Prague in the Europa League, as well as a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Aston Villa.
The club returns to domestic action this Saturday with a trip to Chelsea. Following that, they face a challenging run against Sunderland, Manchester United, Leeds, and Ipswich before the international break arrives in November.
In other squad news, Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa has also been ruled out of the upcoming fixture at Wembley as a precautionary measure. Tuchel explained that Konsa’s condition was not a major concern but was not worth risking. The center-back had been managing discomfort since joining the camp, which worsened after he played against Spain and took a knock against Croatia. With the 28-year-old to return to the Premier League champions for treatment on an injury, arsenal defender Ezri Konsa has also been ruled out of the fixture at Wembley as a precautionary measure. According to tuchel, Konsa’s issues were “nothing major but not worth the risk taking” after the centre-back first missed the match with the Czech Republic in Prague on 29 September and then sustained an injury against Croat. He got another hit on the quad and that caused a light trauma and we decided not to let him play through this pain, so he left camp to get treatment for both his issues now, unfortunately.
Tuchel previously expressed high praise for Scott’s development, specifically after his full international debut. “First start and what a start, what a performance,” Tuchel said. “He is so smooth on the ball, his decision-making is at the highest level, and he plays with such confidence. He is the complete package, offering us mobility and variety in the center of the pitch.”
