Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has poked fun at the drawn-out legal proceedings surrounding Manchester City’s appeal against a significant financial misconduct ruling. The 63-year-old manager suggested that the ongoing nature of the case could outlast him, casting doubt on a swift resolution as the club challenges findings of widespread financial irregularities. City have denied wrongdoing and lodged an appeal.

An independent commission previously determined that City violated Premier League financial rules across the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. Furthermore, the club was found guilty of failing to cooperate with the investigation in three of four counts. The Premier League has alleged that the club utilized sham agreements to artificially inflate revenues and obscure costs exceeding 900 million pounds ($1.19bn) over nearly ten years.

Reflecting on the situation during an interview with Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho remarked, “I would rather laugh about it.” He added, “I think we will eventually get an ending, but we are both in our 60s, and we’ll need to be lucky enough to still be around when the final verdict arrives. There will be a verdict, then appeals, then more appeals.”

Mourinho’s historical perspective is shaped by his time managing Manchester United between 2016 and 2018. During the 2017-18 campaign, his side finished as runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s squad, a season for which he previously suggested he might still be owed a winner’s medal should points be deducted from City. According to the Portuguese manager, now 63,, In 2024 that he had not given up on being awarded a winner’s medal for the 2018 season.

During a 2024 press conference while managing Fenerbahce, he joked that if the league punished Manchester City, “maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal.” Despite the ongoing legal scrutiny, City maintains its innocence and has officially launched an appeal against the commission’s findings.

The appeal process is set to remain private, leaving uncertainty regarding whether sanctions will be applied before a final resolution is reached. Currently, Manchester City sits at the top of the Premier League with 15 points from five matches and is preparing to face Liverpool on Sunday as they pursue a sixth consecutive league title.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Arsenal hosts Leeds on Saturday, while Manchester United is scheduled to play Tottenham. Meanwhile, in Spain, Mourinho’s Real Madrid side is currently trailing Barcelona by six points in the La Liga standings, having secured five wins and two losses in seven matches.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are both set to return to domestic action this Saturday, with matches against Getafe and Villarreal, respectively.
