New Zealand has finalized its squad selections for the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, with Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Tim Seifert earning recalls to the international side. Rachin Ravindra is also set to return to action, having recovered from the shoulder injury that prevented him from participating in the preceding T20I fixtures.

The series is scheduled to commence on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland. To manage player workloads and facilitate preparations for the upcoming Test series, New Zealand has designated separate squads for the opening three matches and the final two. Mitchell Santner will captain both groups throughout the series. A total of seven new players will join the roster for the final two games, while several others depart for Wellington to begin training for the Test matches against India, which start at the Basin Reserve on November 19.

Reflecting on the selection, head coach Rob Walter emphasized the value of testing the team’s depth ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Walter noted the importance of integrating players like Allen, Ferguson, and Seifert, noting their proven impact in the T20 format. Ferguson last appeared for the team in the 2023 World Cup semi-final, while Allen also featured that year. Seifert makes his return to the ODI setup after 18 months, with his previous appearance occurring during a home series against Pakistan. “For Finn and Tim in particular, we’ve seen what they can do in the T20 arena, and it’s now a great opportunity for them to push their case in the longer format.”. To be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. “First and foremost this is a huge series for us, playing in front of our fans in full stadiums against a formidable Indian side,” Walter said, walter felt the home series against India will serve as an important opportunity for New Zealand to assess their options ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup. They’re all exciting and explosive players in their own right and are proven match winners.

Regarding the balance between formats, Walter explained that prioritizing the ICC World Test Championship is essential. He stated that moving some players into Test preparation early is necessary to secure vital championship points. The coach expressed confidence in the 21 players involved across the ODI series, stating that this approach allows for high-level preparation against a formidable opponent.

The ODI squad aims to build upon the core that secured a 2-1 victory in India this past January, which marked New Zealand’s first bilateral series win on Indian soil. However, the team will be without Zak Foulkes, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears, who remain unavailable as they continue rehabilitation for hip flexor, calf, and ankle injuries respectively.

Support for the coaching staff will shift as the series progresses. Rob Walter will remain with the ODI squad for the final two games, assisted by Corey Miles. Meanwhile, batting coach Luke Ronchi and bowling coach Jacob Oram will transition to focusing on the Test squad in Wellington after the third ODI, joined by the newly appointed batting coach BJ Watling. New Zealand is expected to announce its 14-player Test squad in early November.
