The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League is back in action this week, as 36 clubs across Europe continue their pursuit of the continent’s most prestigious trophy. Following an opening round of fixtures that saw front-runners like Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona secure victories, the tournament now enters its second league phase stage.
The Competition Format
Now in its third year, the current format marks a departure from the traditional group system used since 2003. Instead of eight groups of four, the 36 participating teams are now organized into a single league based on a Swiss system, a structure commonly seen in competitive chess. Each club plays eight matches against eight distinct opponents, rather than the previous six games against three teams home and away. An increase from 32 under the old format, this season marks the third time that 36 teams will participate in the main round. That has changed radically in recent years. The 36 clubs are pooled into a single league in a “Swiss system” more commonly associated with chess, from the 2024-25 season.
Advancement remains competitive: the top eight sides in the league table qualify automatically for the knockout rounds. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th place must navigate a two-legged knockout playoff to reach the round of 16, while those ranked 25th or lower are eliminated from the competition entirely. Here’s all you need to know about this year’s competition.
