The UK government has implemented a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, warning that the products pose a “significant risk to the public” amid ongoing drought and heatwave conditions. Officials confirmed these grills have caused “a number of serious wildfires across the country over the summer months.”
The ban follows discussions at an emergency Cobra meeting held earlier this week in response to record temperatures. Authorities are now urging the public to avoid lighting open fires and to dispose of cigarettes with extreme caution. Some retailers had already proactively withdrawn single-use grills from their shelves.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the country as being like “a tinderbox” as fire crews in England and Wales continue to battle multiple blazes. The escalating danger recently prompted an emergency alert to be sent to millions of mobile phones, as West Midlands crews tackled fires for a second consecutive day.
