Chelsea Cruise Past Tottenham with Six-Goal WSL Display

Chelsea maintained their pursuit of Manchester City at the top of the Women’s Super League with a decisive 6-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The match saw standout performances from Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter, who each scored twice to help the home side assert their authority in a high-scoring encounter at Stamford Bridge. At Stamford Bridge heads were up and it had looked like it would be a different story after a strong start by the visiting team.

Tottenham’s recent defensive struggles were highlighted once again as they conceded six goals for the second consecutive league outing.

Following a 6-1 defeat to the London City Lionesses, manager Martin Ho had described himself as the “most frustrated” he has been during his tenure, and his team’s defensive issues resurfaced early when they allowed the opening goal in the 25th minute. Toko Koga was caught out after turning her back on James, who capitalized by driving to the near post and firing into the far corner from a tight angle. Though, with Kadeisha Buchanan on hand to steer the ball out for a corner just ahead of Cathinka Tandberg, the bright play of Ho’s team did not evaporate.

Despite the early setback, Tottenham briefly found a way back into the contest. Matilda Vinberg leveled the score just before halftime, expertly converting a pinpoint delivery from Julie Blakstad with a powerful header. However, any hopes of ending a poor run of form against “big four” opponents—a streak spanning 20 games with 16 defeats and four draws—were effectively dismantled by Chelsea’s increased intensity after the interval. Despite going into the game unbeaten, spurs looked lightweight against the Bromley-based side. Securing four draws and suffering 16 defeats in that time, they were well and truly crushed in the second half, if there was hope that Spurs would end their run of 20 WSL games against big four opposition without a win. Channelling any anger and frustration felt at a less than dominant first-half performance into one laden with gut-busting intensity in the second half, it wasn’t so much a Spurs collapse as Chelsea putting their foot on the gas.

Chelsea’s second-half surge began shortly before the hour mark when Alyssa Thompson surged into the box and laid off an angled cutback for Carpenter to finish. Only four minutes later, James doubled her tally for the afternoon, collecting a pass from Lucy Bronze before beating Koga and curling a precise effort beyond goalkeeper Lize Kop. The onslaught continued as substitute Sjoeke Nüsken powered in a fourth goal, followed by a stylish fifth from Maika Hamano, who found space to curl a shot into the top corner.

Tottenham managed a late consolation through Signe Gaupset, who capitalized on a moment of hesitation from Keira Walsh to fire home a low effort. Any chance of a late surge from the visitors was quickly extinguished when Carpenter secured her second of the match, switching the ball between her feet before finding the net. The result serves as a stark reminder of the gap between the sides, with Chelsea further solidifying their position as serious title contenders while Tottenham continues to search for defensive stability. A game laden with stunning goals after a frustrating first half that allowed Tottenham more of the ball than Chelsea would have been happy with, it was a thrilling show and a statement from the home team.
