Manchester United Retain Michael Carrick for Chelsea Match

Michael Carrick will remain at the helm for Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Chelsea this Saturday. The decision, backed by director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, offers the 45-year-old an opportunity to stabilize the team’s performance after a period of poor form that has left the club sitting in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone. Yet Wilcox, who has driven the retaining of Carrick, wants to give the 45-year-old a chance to transform form and results. Whether Carrick could survive another poor performance and result at Stamford Bridge is in the balance.

The club’s recent struggles have been significant, featuring a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last Sunday and a 4-1 loss against Como in the Champions League the previous Wednesday. Across all competitions, Carrick’s side has secured only two victories in their last twelve matches and has already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup following a loss to Brighton. Carrick’s side have won twice in 12 games and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton.

While Wilcox remains committed to giving the head coach time to orchestrate a turnaround, the situation remains precarious. Should results fail to improve, the club has identified Eddie Howe as a primary candidate for the role. United would be required to pay Newcastle United approximately £3 million in compensation to secure Howe, along with an additional minor fee for his backroom staff, including assistant Jason Tindall.

The club faces a critical stretch with a Champions League match against Roma and a league fixture against Aston Villa approaching before the international break.

These fixtures will likely influence any decision regarding the coaching staff. Meanwhile, alternative options are being considered internally, with director of recruitment Christopher Vivell reportedly advocating for former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann.
