Mike Hussey has been appointed as a consultant coach for the Australian cricket team, a move aimed at addressing recent batting inconsistencies. The 51-year-old former international, widely respected for his technical expertise, will provide specialized support for the upcoming Ashes series against England and the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The appointment follows a period of transition for the Australian squad, which recently suffered a 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa. Hussey’s involvement is part of a broader commitment to restore stability to the batting lineup. He will also assist during the home T20 series against England this month and the forthcoming four-Test series against New Zealand. Highlighted by their recent 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa, but the 51-year-old turned down the audacious offer and has instead committed to helping his home nation arrest a batting crisis. “This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period.”.

Beyond the immediate international calendar, Hussey’s responsibilities will extend to the 2028 T20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking the sport’s inclusion in the Games. “I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” said Hussey, who brings a wealth of experience from over 300 international appearances.

His return to the Australian setup comes after he rejected an informal approach from England’s red-ball coach, Stephen Fleming, earlier this August. Hussey’s coaching resume includes a successful stint with England during their 2022 T20 World Cup victory and a long tenure as batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, in addition to leading Welsh Fire in this year’s edition of The Hundred.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald praised the selection, noting the depth of skill Hussey adds to the backroom staff. “Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players,” McDonald stated. “Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, and countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person.”
