The ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka has been defined by more than just professional performance; it has highlighted the genuine camaraderie between KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal. A poignant moment occurred on day four of the Galle Test when, following a successful DRS review initiated by Padikkal, a delighted Rahul embraced his teammate with such intensity that he nearly kissed his cheek, stopped only by the helmet grille. This display of affection underscored the deep bond between the two, who have been close friends since their early days representing Karnataka.
Their connection extends well beyond the cricket pitch. Friends of the duo note that they are inseparable during tours, often spending their downtime scouting for coffee shops, as both are self-proclaimed coffee enthusiasts. They are frequently joined in these outings by teammates such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and fellow Karnataka player Prasidh Krishna. This shared life off the field has clearly fostered a comfort level that translates into their batting partnerships.
The pair’s preparation for the Sri Lanka tour involved focused training on handling spin, a strategy that has yielded immediate results. In the current Test, they have combined for 227 runs across two innings. Individually, one has amassed 211 runs, highlighted by a significant century, while the other has contributed 117 runs, including a crucial half-century. Reflecting on their synergy, Padikkal noted after day four, “Batting with KL, I think it’s always been enjoyable. I think I have played quite a few innings with him now, even with Karnataka as well. We have had some long partnerships. I think he understands the way I bat, the tempo in which I bat.”
Padikkal emphasized that this mutual understanding allows them to push their limits, stating, “And I do the same as well. So when you have that kind of chemistry, I think it helps in stitching that partnership. And really pushing the limits as to how far we can go. I think that’s something that he helps me with.” Their history is extensive, having played 27 matches together for Karnataka, including six Ranji Trophy, 13 List A, and eight Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games. They have also shared the field in two Tests—the first being in Perth during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy—and seven IPL matches.
Their professional association was further solidified when Rahul, while captaining the Lucknow Super Giants before the 2024 IPL season, requested the management to acquire Padikkal. The resulting trade with the Rajasthan Royals involved sending Avesh Khan to the Royals. Although Padikkal’s initial season with LSG saw him score 37 runs in seven games, he has since found success, contributing to back-to-back title-winning campaigns after joining RCB.
Rahul has been vocal in his support for his younger colleague, praising his development from his Under-19 days to the international stage. “Obviously, coming from the same state, Dev is somebody that I’ve seen come through the ranks from Under-19s and score tons and tons of runs for Karnataka and make his way up to Indian cricket,” Rahul told bcci.tv. He highlighted the extensive discussions they held regarding expectations in Sri Lanka and the necessary adjustments for Test cricket. Rahul expressed immense pride in Padikkal’s maiden Test century of 167 in the first innings, noting, “He’s someone who loves batting and scoring big runs, and I’m really happy that he could get his first hundred, and that’s really special for everybody.”
The vice-captain believes Padikkal is now at a pivotal stage in his career. “It’s very important to get that early in your career so you can get that out of the way and then start enjoying your cricket, start enjoying your batting and take your batting to the next level,” Rahul added, noting that the younger batter’s deep understanding of his own game is now paying dividends on the international stage. The report also notes that the tempo in which I bat,” Padikkal said after Day 4 of the Test, i think he understands the way I bat. The report also notes that rahul (34) and Padikkal (26) have played 27 matches together for Karnataka – six Ranji Trophy, 13 List A and eight Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games – over the years. The report also notes that but after being bought by RCB, he has been part of back-to-back title-winning seasons, it was a different matter that Padikkal did not do particularly well that season (he scored only 37 runs in seven games). The report also notes that looking for coffee joints,” says a common friend, they roam around the touring cities.
