Arsenal surged to the top of the English Premier League table with a decisive 1-0 victory against Liverpool at Anfield. This result moves the Gunners three points clear of Manchester City, who currently sit on 21 points following their recent defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion. Arsenal now leads the league with 24 points from their opening nine matches.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Mikel Arteta’s side, representing their first win at the stadium since September 2012, when Arteta himself captained the team to a 2-0 win. Prior to Saturday’s result, Arsenal had failed to secure a victory during their previous 13 visits to the venue. The deciding moment arrived in the 16th minute when Kai Havertz converted a low cross from Declan Rice after Liverpool faltered while attempting to play out from their own defensive third. However, Kai Havertz turned home a low cross from Declan Rice after the home side were caught trying to play out from the back to silence the Kop on 16 minutes.

Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, including a free kick from Florian Wirtz that struck the crossbar and a missed header by Alexis Mac Allister, Arsenal’s defense remained resilient. The visitors successfully held off the home side, ensuring Liverpool failed to register a shot on target for the second consecutive meeting between the teams. This loss, only Liverpool’s second of the domestic campaign, drops them to fifth place, now trailing Arsenal by nine points. The visitors withstood wave after wave of pressure from Andoni Iraola’s side thereafter. Though, and defended superbly to keep Liverpool largely at arm’s length after the break, denying the home side a shot on target for the second meeting in succession, arsenal weathered the storm.
