Manchester United’s struggles continued with a 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid, a result that further compounds the team’s worst start to a Premier League campaign in four decades. Despite manager Michael Carrick’s pre-match confidence that his squad was prepared to embrace the challenge, the visitors were behind after just 53 seconds when Pablo Barrios found the net. The goal came as United’s defense failed to track runs into the box, allowing Álex Baena to set up Barrios, whose deflected shot off Ayden Heaven opened the scoring. Following the goal, Barrios dedicated the moment to club captain Koke, whose mother had passed away earlier that day. He said, but no one else can, michael Carrick had seen it in his players. Where they have suffered their worst start in 40 years, and not here in Madrid, where Manchester United’s head coach insisted they would embrace the challenge, not so far in the Premier League. He promised; he had looked at them and was sure of it, the reaction was coming. A rebellion: in their place a kind of resignation, a sense that maybe this is just United’s reality: a game that began badly, did not get very much better, and finished even worse, so much for a reaction. According to “Sometimes when it’s not quite going for you, you see who’s really there,” United’s manager, The night before, a message that perhaps hinted at something rotten beneath the surface, but on the opening goal no one was really there. Where Lee Kang-in’s pass sent Álex Baena into a wide-open space; they weren’t there to close him down as he cut into the area; and they weren’t there on the right either, where Barrios was running through alone, they weren’t there on the left. From the bench Koke’s shirt was raised.
The match saw Atlético dominate the first half, enjoying 66% of possession. United struggled to find their rhythm, though they did create chances through Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba, all of which were neutralized by Jan Oblak. Atlético’s pressure remained constant, with Álex Grimaldo hitting the bar from a free-kick and a Johnny Cardoso goal ruled out by VAR due to a Marcos Llorente handball. Early in the second half, Julián Álvarez struck the post as the hosts continued to exploit significant gaps in United’s structure.
United captain Bruno Fernandes had a prime opportunity to equalize after being played through by Youri Tielemans, but his effort went wide. Later, Fernandes saw a shot rattle the crossbar as United briefly threatened a comeback. The contest turned definitively in the 74th minute during a clash between Jonathan David and Leny Yoro. Although referee Glenn Nyberg initially allowed play to continue, a VAR review resulted in a red card for Yoro for his involvement in the challenge, effectively ending United’s hopes.
Shortly after the dismissal, Atlético sealed the victory. Grimaldo initiated the move, finding David, whose shot was initially parried by Senne Lammens before Ademola Lookman tapped in the rebound. The defeat leaves United searching for answers after another underwhelming performance. Reflecting on his squad’s recent form, Carrick had previously noted that difficult periods often reveal a player’s true character, yet the team’s inability to compete effectively in Madrid suggests deep-seated issues remain unresolved as their season continues to falter.
