Cristiano Ronaldo Alleges Broken Promises by Portugal Coach Jorge

Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly accused Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus of failing to keep his word on two separate occasions. The 41-year-old forward detailed a breakdown in their relationship, which resulted in his premature exit from the national squad’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their recent Nations League match against Denmark. The 41-year-old gave his account of the dispute that prompted his departure from Copenhagen before Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark last week, in a lengthy statement.

According to Ronaldo, he and the manager had initially agreed on a fitness management plan that would see the captain sit out both the Norway and Denmark matches. However, the situation changed on the day of the Norway fixture when Jesus informed him he would play for 30 minutes. The player described the outcome, noting: “Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on. The manager had broken his word to me.”

The dispute continued after the match, leading to a follow-up meeting involving the player, Jesus, and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. During this discussion, the parties allegedly reached an agreement for the coach to clarify the situation at a future press conference. A formal eight-point document was reportedly prepared, acknowledging that Ronaldo had not demanded playing time and that the coach’s decision to have him warm up without sending him onto the pitch was a mistake.

Ronaldo stated that while the document did not demand an apology, the coach’s subsequent public remarks contradicted their private arrangement. “It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said, adding that he chose to leave the team camp to avoid further broken commitments. In contrast, Jesus denied that any such agreement existed during a press event following the victory over Norway, though he noted that the possibility of Ronaldo’s return remains open.

Regarding his own behavior, the veteran forward expressed regret for not acknowledging supporters after the match and for abandoning his teammates, admitting that his role as captain made his actions particularly serious. He stated that he awaits assessment and potential punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which has yet to provide an official comment on the matter.

Despite the current tension, Ronaldo has signaled that he does not intend to end his international career. “If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring goals, I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team,” he confirmed.
