Delhi Capitals have secured former Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaminda Vaas as their new fast bowling coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The 52-year-old, renowned for claiming 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI scalps during his playing career, steps into the role to join the franchise’s revamped coaching structure, which is led by head coach Sourav Ganguly. Vaas takes over responsibilities from Munaf Patel, who served as the team’s bowling coach for the past two seasons. Vaas, among Sri Lanka’s most successful bowlers with 355 Test wickets and 400 in ODIs, joins the new-look Capitals’ backroom staff helmed by head coach Sourav Ganguly.
Vaas brings significant international experience to the position, having previously coached the Sri Lankan men’s team across three separate terms. His coaching career began with a brief contract for New Zealand, followed by a stint with Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015. He also served as the bowling coach for Ireland during the 2016 T20 World Cup. Beyond his coaching credentials, Vaas holds past IPL playing experience, having represented the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010, where he recorded 18 wickets in 13 matches. His coaching debut came for New Zealand for a brief contract before he was appointed for the Sri Lankan side from 2013-15. For Deccan Chargers between 2008-10 where he picked 18 wickets in 13 games for the franchise, vaas has also played in the IPL.
