Rui Pinto, the founder of Football Leaks, is set to lose his witness protection status despite expressing grave concerns that he could be assassinated. Pinto is responsible for releasing a vast tranche of confidential documents, including internal emails and financial records, concerning English Premier League club Manchester City.
Investigation Origins and Impact
- In 2018, Pinto shared documents with the German magazine Der Spiegel, which utilized the data for investigations into City’s finances and alleged breaches of financial fair play rules.
- Last week, City were found guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, a verdict the club has since appealed.
