George Russell’s 2026 Formula 1 championship aspirations face a mounting challenge as the Mercedes driver prepares to start the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid. This penalty stems from the team’s decision to fit a new power unit into his W17, causing him to exceed the seasonal limit of four engine components.
The move follows a disastrous outing at the recent Bahrain GP in Malaysia, where Russell was forced to retire from a third-place position during the final laps of a chaotic, rain-affected race. His teammate and current title leader, Kimi Antonelli, secured second place behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, leaving Russell trailing by 84 points with only seven rounds left in the season. Coming into that race, Russell had been 66 points behind, but his retirement left his title hopes hanging by a thread.
Mercedes initially intended for the Briton to take the penalty at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, coinciding with a planned upgrade package. However, the team has opted to implement the power unit change in Singapore to avoid future penalties later in the campaign. The Marina Bay Street Circuit, where Russell claimed victory in 2025, now presents a difficult hurdle for a comeback charge from the very back of the pack.
Team deputy principal Bradley Lord confirmed that a preliminary inspection of the retired vehicle revealed a mechanical issue within the power unit. “Our investigation so far, we’ve got the car back, we’ve been able to do a first inspection, and it’s clearly a mechanical failure on the power unit side,” Lord stated during a Mercedes debrief. Team boss Toto Wolff described the Malaysian event as the “worst weekend of the season” for the squad, exacerbated by the shock of Russell’s unexpected retirement.
The recent performance shift has been marked by Red Bull’s resurgence following significant aerodynamic upgrades introduced in Azerbaijan. While Mercedes also brought technical updates to Malaysia, the Milton Keynes team outperformed them in Sepang, where Verstappen captured his first victory of the season.
