Over three decades ago, Bristol cultivated a rebellious spirit that led to the creation of jungle and drum and bass. This experimental sound emerged in the early 1990s, driven by the local DJ collective Full Cycle, who drew heavy influence from hip hop, acid house, and traditional Jamaican sound systems. Giving birth to the global phenomenon that is jungle and drum and bass music, it has been more than 30 years since Bristol with a “rebel” mentality ventured into the unknown. With a DJ collective called Full Cycle, external, it all started in the early 90s.
For members of the Full Cycle label, this emerging genre deeply resonated as something that “felt like home.” While jungle developed simultaneously in hubs like London, the initial Bristol-based output was noted for its particularly expansive and experimental nature.
Today, the city remains a significant force within the dance music industry. Its legacy continues to influence new generations of creators, encouraging them to keep challenging boundaries and evolving the genre globally. Inspiring generations of artists to continue pushing boundaries in dance music, the city is still a heavyweight on the scene.
