Youri Tielemans officially joined Manchester United on a contract running until June 2031, marking a significant addition to the squad’s midfield options. The Belgian international’s debut occurred during a 1-1 friendly draw against Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg, though his time on the pitch was limited to a sample size of just 26 minutes.
The timing of his introduction proved critical. With significant scrutiny surrounding Manchester United’s transfer market activity this summer, Tielemans was called upon unexpectedly when Mason Mount, arguably the club’s standout performer during pre-season, required a substitution after only 20 minutes of play. Head coach Michael Carrick later clarified to Norwegian broadcaster VG that Mount’s withdrawal was purely precautionary following a heavy blow to his foot, noting that the midfielder was able to walk freely toward the team bus post-match.
Tielemans arrived at Old Trafford as a surprise signing after the club triggered a previously unknown £35m release clause in his contract at Aston Villa. In the immediate aftermath of the match, there was considerable debate regarding the 29-year-old’s recent playing time, given that he has been a professional since making his debut for Anderlecht at the age of 16.

Rashford, England team-mate Kobbie Mainoo and Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez are the final three players to return for United after the World Cup.
