Zimbabwe launched their ODI tri-series campaign with a dominant 99-run victory over Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Despite a precarious start, veteran experience proved decisive as Zimbabwe defended their total of 271 for 8 by bowling out their opponents for 172 in just 33.4 overs.
The match began with a fiery opening spell from Taskin Ahmed, who tore through Zimbabwe’s top order to leave them reeling at 24 for 3 after only seven overs. Taskin claimed the wickets of Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, and Tafadzwa Tsiga, finishing as the standout bowler with 3 for 44. However, the innings was rebuilt by a crucial 150-run partnership between Craig Ervine, who scored 93 off 106 balls, and Brendan Taylor, who contributed 81 off 101 balls. Late, vital cameos from Newman Nyamhuri and Wellington Masakadza, who both remained unbeaten on 21, ensured Zimbabwe reached a challenging score. Late cameos from lower-order batters Newman Nyamhuri (21* off 17) and Wellington Masakadza (21* off 15) propelled Zimbabwe to a competitive total of 271 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Picking up 3 for 44 in his 10 overs, while Saif and Shoriful Islam chipped in with two apiece, taskin was the standout bowler for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s chase started with intent behind a quickfire 46 from Tanzid Hasan Tamim. The momentum shifted immediately after his dismissal in the tenth over, following the earlier loss of Soumya Sarkar to Blessing Muzarabani. From there, the innings unraveled as Brad Evans sliced through the middle and lower order, finishing with figures of 4 for 45. Spinners Wellington Masakadza and Sikandar Raza combined effectively to restrict scoring and claim three wickets between them. In response, Bangladesh got off to an aggressive start through Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who struck a quickfire 46 off 38 balls with nine boundaries and a six. However, once Blessing Muzarabani removed Soumya Sarkar for 9 and Newman Nyamhuri dismissed Tanzid in the tenth over, Bangladesh suffered a collapse.
Despite a modest 32-run resistance from Rishad Hossain and Taskin Ahmed for the ninth wicket, Bangladesh could not recover from the middle-order collapse. The comprehensive win serves as a strong opening statement for Zimbabwe in the tri-nation tournament. Brief scores: Zimbabwe 271/8 in 50 overs (Ervine 93, Taylor 81; Taskin 3-44) defeated Bangladesh 172 all out in 33.4 overs (Tanzid 46; Evans 4-45, Masakadza 2-18) by 99 runs. Veterans Craig Ervine (93) and Brendan Taylor (81) pulled Zimbabwe out of a hole with a 150-run stand to help post a respectable 271/8 before the bowlers choked Bangladesh inside 34 overs. And followed it quickly with that of Sikandar Raza, saif Hassan got Bangladesh the much-needed wicket of Taylor to break the stubborn stand.
