Coaches downplay fiery Jaiswal-Fernando confrontation in Colombo Test

Update: 23 August 2026, 9:04:50 PM

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has addressed the tense confrontation on Day 1 of the Colombo Test between opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando. The incident occurred after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal, who had struck three boundaries in that same over. As Jaiswal began walking off, Fernando appeared to offer a send-off, prompting the Indian batter to turn back and confront the bowler. The situation escalated to a near head-to-head clash before Sri Lankan fielders intervened to separate the pair.

Coaches’ perspectives on the incident

  • Sitanshu Kotak described the exchange as a product of the “heat of the moment.” While acknowledging the intensity of Test cricket, he noted, “Obviously Yashasvi shouldn’t have gone so close to him but it happened in the heat of the moment.”
  • Sri Lanka fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk also addressed the situation, attributing the verbals to an “overflow of emotions” during a hard day of play.
  • Van Niekerk defended his team’s aggressive approach, stating, “When you’re coming up against a team like India, you can’t sit on the back foot and just bowl at them. I’ve really asked the bowlers to stand up and create something.”
  • Regarding potential disciplinary action, Van Niekerk added, “I’ll leave that to the match referee to deal with.”

ICC match referee Andy Pycroft will now evaluate the incident. While the coaches have downplayed the exchange, the ICC maintains strict protocols regarding send-offs. If video evidence confirms inappropriate physical contact between Jaiswal and Fernando, both players could face official sanctions under the ICC code of conduct. The report also notes that he felt it was part of a hard day’s game and put it down to an “overflow of emotions” in the end. The report also notes that it’s bringing the challenge all the time, trying to make sure we can create something,” Ryan van Niekerk said, i think from our side. The report also notes that words, whatever they were, triggered Jaiswal and he turned around and walked towards the bowler to confront him.
