England Bowler Brydon Carse Under ECB Investigation Following Derby Nightclub Incident

Update: 23 August 2026, 11:31:30 PM

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed it is investigating an incident involving England bowler Brydon Carse, which reportedly occurred at a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night. Social media footage circulating on Sunday appeared to show the cricketer being led away from the venue in handcuffs by four police officers.

Carse, who made his international debut for England in 2021, was not on official team duty at the time of the incident. The Durham player, who was accompanied by teammate Matthew Potts, is scheduled to rejoin the England squad on Monday ahead of the second Test against Pakistan.

In a brief statement, the ECB noted, “We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible.”

This development arrives just five days after England captain Joe Root, 35, emphasized the importance of player conduct at the start of his second tenure as Test captain. Root recently told the media that the team needs to act as “really good role models and human beings” to represent the country effectively, acknowledging that the squad had fallen short of those standards in the recent past.

The team has faced a turbulent period, marked by the retirement of Ben Stokes and the dismissal of coach Brendon McCullum following a 2-1 series loss to New Zealand. Previous tours were also marred by off-field controversies, including a 4-1 Ashes defeat by Australia that featured a drinking incident in Noosa and a confrontation involving Harry Brook and a nightclub bouncer in Wellington.

Despite this history of disciplinary issues, Root recently opted to remove the midnight curfew that had been in place since January. Addressing the decision on Sky Sports, Root stated, “There’s not going to be a curfew. I don’t think this needs to be a big deal, to be honest.”

Carse has previously faced disciplinary action, having served a three-month suspension in 2024 for historic betting violations. He was sanctioned for placing 303 bets on cricket matches between 2017 and 2019, although he was not personally involved in any of the matches he wagered on. The report also notes that you always want to represent your country in the best possible light,” Root, 35, said Sport. The report also notes that setting in motion a chaotic six weeks that resulted in a 2-1 series defeat by New Zealand, Stokes’ retirement and the sacking of McCullum, the issues continued into the summer when Stokes broke a team curfew. The report also notes that carse, who was born in South Africa, was suspended from cricket for three months in 2024 for historic betting offences.
