Former England captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes has officially signed with the Adelaide Strikers for the entirety of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season. The 35-year-old’s arrival marks a significant coup for the tournament, as he becomes the most high-profile foreign player in the competition’s 16th edition. The deal, which is reportedly valued in excess of 500,000 AUD, follows a competitive recruitment process that saw the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades also vying for his signature.
The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) confirmed the signing, noting that Stokes’ personal affinity for the city of Adelaide and the iconic Adelaide Oval was instrumental in finalizing the agreement. SACA’s General Manager of Cricket, Simon Insley, spearheaded the negotiations. A source within the organization stated that Stokes is fully committed to representing the team, adding, “Ben is fully committed to donning the blue for the Strikers and being a true blue South Australian throughout the upcoming BBL season.”
Stokes is set to join the squad for their opening match against the Sydney Thunder in Canberra. Should the Strikers progress through the tournament, he will remain with the team through the business end of the season, culminating in the grand final scheduled for January 26, 2027. His presence is expected to provide a substantial boost to the Strikers’ lineup, which features white-ball regular Matt Short alongside local talents such as Jason Sangha, Liam Scott, Henry Thornton, and Mackenzie Harvey. While Alex Carey is also currently in the squad, his participation remains uncertain due to his commitments with the Australian Test team.
The move reunites Stokes with former Australian Test captain Tim Paine, who now serves as the Strikers’ coach. The two share a storied history, most notably during the 2019 Ashes series when Stokes produced a legendary performance at Headingley. Reflecting on the signing, Paine remarked, “Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure.”
Stokes’ return to the BBL comes over a decade after his last appearance in the league in 2015. Since retiring from international white-ball cricket and subsequently stepping away from Test cricket, he has maintained strong form with Durham. In recent domestic outings, he has averaged 63.60 in the County Championship and 41.14 in List A cricket. Although he has not played T20 cricket since the 2023 IPL with the Chennai Super Kings, he did participate in a limited number of matches during the 2024 edition of The Hundred.
