Liverpool Supporters Group Demands Transparency Over Potential Bezos-Led Minority Stake Acquisition

Update: 12 August 2026, 11:28:55 AM

The Spirit of Shankly, a prominent Liverpool supporters’ group, has publicly urged the club to prioritize the interests of its fanbase following reports that a high-profile consortium is nearing an agreement to purchase a significant minority stake. The group has formally requested a meeting with club leadership to gain clarity on the potential transaction, emphasizing that the ownership and long-term custodianship of the club remain paramount to the supporters.

According to reports from Sky News on Monday, the investment group is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. The consortium reportedly includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool, previously confirmed they had received an approach from the Bhatia-led group in July. Sources suggest the deal could involve the sale of approximately one-third of the club, with an official announcement potentially arriving as soon as this week.

The financial scale of the potential investors is substantial; Forbes estimates the 62-year-old Bezos holds a fortune exceeding $280 billion, while Saverin’s wealth is valued at $33 billion. Despite his immense resources, Bezos has previously explored, but ultimately declined, bids for NFL franchises including the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders.

In a formal statement, the Spirit of Shankly expressed concern regarding the implications of such a significant ownership shift. The group noted that they have observed similar sales at other football clubs that resulted in drastic changes to operational management and club culture—outcomes they wish to avoid at Anfield. “Putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first is fundamental to us all,” the group stated, adding that the prospect of a 30 percent sale is a development of major significance.

This potential transition occurs during a period of instability for the club. Liverpool secured the Premier League title during the 2024/25 campaign under manager Arne Slot; however, the Dutchman was dismissed in May following a turbulent season. The team is currently under the management of Andoni Iraola as they navigate these significant off-pitch developments.

Bezos is one of the world’s richest men, with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at more than $280 billion, while Saverin’s wealth is put at $33 billion.
