The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially designated Goa as the host city for the upcoming IPL auction. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed on Wednesday, September 23, that the event is slated for mid-December, likely falling between December 14 and 16. As the proceedings are expected to be a small-scale auction, the event will conclude within a single day.
This decision marks a shift back to domestic soil after the BCCI held the previous three auctions in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Jeddah. The shift follows feedback from a majority of IPL franchises, prompting the Governing Council to favor an Indian venue. The board prioritized securing a five-star hotel capable of hosting more than 100 guests to accommodate the expansive delegations from each of the 10 franchises.
Goa previously served as the auction site for the second IPL season in 2009. That event remains memorable for the record-breaking bids secured by England internationals Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, who were signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, respectively, for USD 1.55 million each. It was also noted for a high-profile bidding war involving actor Shah Rukh Khan, as the Kolkata Knight Riders outbid the Punjab Kings to acquire Mashrafe Mortaza for USD 600,000, well above his USD 50,000 base price.
While the IPL auction returns to Indian shores, the BCCI has indicated that future mega auctions may still be considered for international locations. Additionally, the board previously announced that the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction is scheduled to take place in Kochi on October 28.
