During the program, Madonna spoke about her career history, recalling a moment from the inaugural MTV awards when her manager told her she was finished after a performance mishap. Grunge legends Nirvana were honored with the Video Vanguard award, marking the first time in over two decades that a group has received this distinction. Bass player Krist Novoselic accepted the award following a tribute to the band’s legacy, which included a look back at the impact of the late frontman Kurt Cobain, who died by suicide in 1994. “Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people are still hungry for authenticity,” Novoselic stated. “Something real, something uncompromising. Something that tells you it’s just okay to come as you are.” In other categories, Blackpink member LISA took home the Best Pop award for “Dream,” a collaboration with Kentaro Sakaguchi. They are the first group to receive the top honour in more than 20 years.
