Mohit Sharma is transitioning into a coaching career, joining the Chennai Super Kings as their new bowling coach. The 38-year-old, who retired from all forms of professional cricket in December 2025, replaces Eric Simmons. Simmons had previously occupied this position during the tenure of long-standing head coach Stephen Fleming.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the appointment, noting that the franchise’s new head coach, Zaheer Khan, is currently building his support team. Viswanathan stated that while Zaheer is finalizing the staff, he has specifically identified Mohit to lead the bowling department. Mohit becomes the first member to officially join the new coaching unit under Khan.
During his playing career, Mohit represented CSK in 48 Indian Premier League matches and appeared in 10 games across two seasons of the Champions League T20. He also earned eight T20I caps for India and was active in the IPL as recently as the 2025 season. His return to the franchise comes as the team aims for a major turnaround following three consecutive seasons where they failed to qualify for the playoffs. He played 48 times for CSK in the IPL with 10 more appearances coming across two seasons of the now-defunct Champions League T20.
The franchise, which last secured a championship title in 2023, is still searching for a batting coach to complete their 2027 season staff. While Michael Hussey held that role previously, management is currently considering three or four candidates for the position. These structural changes follow the departure of Stephen Fleming, whose long-term stint as head coach concluded earlier this year.
