Fernando Alonso Recommits to Aston Martin for 2027 Season

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has confirmed his future with Aston Martin, securing his place on the grid for at least another season. The team announced on Tuesday that it will maintain an unchanged driver lineup for 2027, with Alonso continuing alongside teammate Lance Stroll. The deal effectively ends speculation surrounding the Spaniard’s career trajectory as he prepares to race past his 46th birthday next July.

Reflecting on the decision, Alonso stated, “I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.” The veteran driver, who claimed his two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, joined Aston Martin in 2023. Since moving to the team, he has secured eight podium finishes and two second-place results.

Despite these past successes, the Silverstone-based outfit is currently enduring a difficult campaign with an uncompetitive car paired with a Honda power unit. The team sits 10th in the standings out of 11 competitors, having gathered only three points across 15 rounds—all of which were contributed by Alonso. Addressing concerns over his longevity, Alonso emphasized that his focus remains on personal motivation and future goals rather than age, even after previously considering alternatives like the Dakar Rally or another attempt at the Indianapolis 500. Saying in August that ⁠⁠he would consider other positions at the team if they saw greater value in that, but he also had other challenges ⁠⁠in mind, such as the Dakar Rally or ⁠having another go at the Indianapolis 500, alonso had been evaluating his position.

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed,” Alonso added. “I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.” Team owner Lawrence Stroll highlighted the strategic importance of retaining a veteran duo for a program with championship aspirations. “We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives,” Stroll said.
