Michael Goessling, a 59-year-old Missouri resident, spent his life as an avid admirer of The Doobie Brothers, often singing along to hits like “China Grove” and “Black Water.” He describes himself as having always been a “music nut,” a passion that has taken on profound new significance following the discovery that the band’s iconic lead singer, Michael McDonald, is his biological father. According to “I was a crazy Doobie Brothers fan and people remember me singing along to ‘China Grove’ and listening to their music like ‘Black Water’ back in the day,” the now 59-year-old, In an interview. “I was always a bit of a music nut and it’s starting to make sense nowadays.”. “He found me instantly and got an email saying ‘Michael Goessling, St. Goessling has been a huge fan of McDonald as both a member of The Doobie Brothers and a solo artist and had even attended a few of his concerts over the years.

The journey to this revelation began about 15 years ago when Goessling, who was adopted as an infant, signed up for the genetic testing service 23andMe. He initially sought the information to identify any potential hereditary health concerns before becoming a father himself. After receiving normal test results, he considered deactivating his account but felt a persistent “gut feeling” to keep his profile active. That intuition proved life-changing when, one year ago, Dylan McDonald—Michael McDonald’s son with wife Amy Holland—used the platform to locate Goessling. Dylan and his sister, Scarlett, had long been aware of a half-sibling and knew their father had never abandoned the hope of meeting the son he placed for adoption as a teenager. As an adopted child, registered with the genetic testing company 23andMe to try and determine if there were any medical issues he might have inherited from his biologica, fast forward to about 15 years ago when Goessling.

Goessling’s biological parents, McDonald and a woman identified only as Diane, were both 14 years old when they faced an unexpected pregnancy. While they briefly considered marriage and reliance on family support, it was ultimately decided that the infant would be placed for adoption through Catholic Charities. Goessling was subsequently adopted by Paul and Kay Goessling, describing his upbringing in Missouri as an idyllic and loving experience.

Since reconnecting, Goessling has navigated the surreal reality of finding his biological roots. He first established contact with his birth mother before reaching out to the five-time Grammy winner, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Doobie Brothers in 2020. “I’m still trying to get my head around this whole thing,” Goessling remarked. “I still wake up a year later and my first thought is I’m waking up from the craziest dream still, still to this day.”

McDonald shared with Nashville news station WSMV that he had carried the weight of guilt regarding the adoption for years. Connecting with his son in 2025 offered him a sense of peace. “Just to know that he was ok and that he had a good life and a life certainly that I probably wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time in my life was…a great reward,” the musician explained. According to mcDonald, Affiliate WSMV Channel 4 in Nashville, Tennessee, that he had carried guilt about the adoption for years, before finally connecting with Goessling in 2025.

The two men have since bonded, finding irony in the fact that they coincidentally share the same first name despite the adoption being closed. They also note a striking physical resemblance, specifically regarding their facial hair, a style Goessling adopted at his wife Nicole’s suggestion during the pandemic. Beyond their shared name and appearance, Goessling finds McDonald to be a kind, funny, and intelligent individual.

While they share a deep love for music, Goessling admitted with a laugh that his vocal talents did not come from his father. “I did not inherit the voice,” he said. “God only made one of those.” Today, the pair hopes that by sharing their story publicly, they can shed light on the importance of adoption. Goessling is particularly grateful for the connection to his birth parents and treasures the blended family dynamic they have cultivated, wishing his late adoptive father, Paul, could have witnessed it.
