Actress Florence Pugh is embracing a transformative stage in her career, attributing her recent professional growth to her portrayal of Cathy Ames in the limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s seminal novel, East of Eden. The 30-year-old performer noted that the role has provided her with the opportunity “to be bigger and better” as an artist.

Reflecting on her decision to join the project, Pugh shared with Netflix’s Tudum that she had been seeking roles that would challenge her craft since reading the script in 2020. She specifically sought work that would require her to mature and expand her range. Zoe Kazan, who serves as both writer and executive producer for the series, invited Pugh to collaborate on the project via an email that sought not just an actress, but a partner for the creative journey. Pugh described this invitation as a significant confidence boost, noting that it allowed her to participate in building a narrative from its inception. Florence told Netflix’s Tudum “When I read the script (in) 2020, I was already thinking about roles that I would want to play in the future and roles that would require for me to grow up, to better my craft, to allow me. She further mentioned, “During that time, this fell in my lap, via an email with an invite from Zoe saying, ‘Can you make this with me.

Beyond the technical demands of the role, Pugh found the psychological exploration of her character, Cathy, to be both daunting and exciting. She explained that she felt compelled to investigate the character’s motivations and the reasoning behind her complex life decisions, while simultaneously stepping into a creative role behind the scenes. This holistic involvement allowed her to advocate for herself as both a performer and a creative contributor.

Pugh’s career has been characterized by consistent critical acclaim since her professional debut while in sixth form. Her 2014 breakout in The Falling, where she starred opposite Maisie Williams, earned praise from critics like Tara Brady of The Irish Times, who labeled her performance “remarkable,” and IndieWire’s Oliver Lyttelton, who called her “striking.”

The years that followed saw Pugh’s rapid ascent in the industry, beginning with notable roles in the drama Lady Macbeth (2016) and the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl (2018). Her international profile surged in 2019 through a series of high-profile performances, including Paige in the sports drama Fighting with My Family, Dani Ardor in the horror film Midsommar, and Amy March in the period drama Little Women, the latter of which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Her extensive filmography further includes her portrayal of Yelena Belova / Black Widow across several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, such as Black Widow (2021), the series Hawkeye (2021), Thunderbolts* (2025), and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). She has also voiced characters in major features like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) and appeared in high-profile dramas including Oppenheimer (2023), Dune: Part Two (2024), and We Live in Time (2024).
