Actor Michael Douglas has finally addressed a long-rumored on-set romance that he managed to keep under wraps for four decades. In his recently published memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old Oscar winner confirms that he and co-star Kathleen Turner, now 72, became romantically involved while filming the 1984 blockbuster Romancing the Stone on location in Mexico. Michael Douglas is owning up to an on-set romance that he has kept secret for 40 years.
At the time of the production, Douglas was technically still married to his first wife, Diandra Luker, with whom he shares a son, Cameron. However, he notes that their domestic life was already in decline. Douglas writes that he and Luker were both pursuing affairs during that period, and he arrived in Mexico as a man in the midst of a separation.
Describing his immediate connection with his co-star, Douglas recounts being drawn to her wit and screen presence. He describes Turner as smart, funny, and sexy, specifically noting her deep, signature voice as something that left a lasting impression. He says they bonded naturally, transitioning from friends to co-stars and eventually lovers throughout the stressful production process. He recalled meeting Turner during the casting process and hitting it off rightaway. “Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature,” he wrote, according to an excerpt of the memoir obtained by People. “I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other. “. Like every other guy in the world at the time, I was knocked sideways by Kathleen.”. We’d go out and have a meal, or head out with the group and afterward I would sneak into her hotel room after everybody was asleep.”, following an exhausting day of shooting in the jungle.
The actor admits that the pair went to great lengths to conceal their relationship from the rest of the crew, including director Robert Zemeckis and fellow actor Danny DeVito. Despite the intense chemistry that audiences later speculated was real, the duo maintained a public facade for years. Douglas clarifies that their long-standing official narrative—which claimed they simply enjoyed great chemistry and playful banter—was entirely fabricated.
Their clandestine relationship faced a turning point when Luker traveled to the Mexican set with their son. Douglas writes that his wife became suspicious due to her intuition, leading to a confrontation where she reminded Turner of his marital status. Feeling unwilling to interfere in his marriage, Turner decided to end the affair. Douglas subsequently returned to his marriage, though he reflects that the reunion was ill-advised and noted that their relationship never recovered. The former couple eventually divorced in 2000, the same year Douglas married his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
For years, the pair continued to deny any intimate involvement while promoting later collaborations like The Jewel of the Nile and The War of the Roses, as well as more recent projects. However, the truth has gradually come to light. In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Turner alluded to the depth of their connection, suggesting they were falling in love at the time but that the situation was complicated by Douglas’s marriage. When pressed by interviewers about the nature of their past closeness, Turner had previously kept her answers guarded.
Reflecting on the secrecy, Douglas states that he sought Turner’s permission before including the details of their time together in his memoir. He maintains that their bond was genuine, describing it as a relationship that grew from mutual respect, shared pressure, and intense attraction rather than a fleeting fling. Despite the clandestine end to their romance, the two have remained friends throughout the decades that followed their initial collaboration. The Fatal Attraction actor continued: “Things at home were in a bad place.
