Former Chelsea first-team doctor Eva Carneiro has publicly criticized Jose Mourinho and John Terry after the pair revisited the 2015 incident that ultimately led to her departure from the club. In a recently released Netflix documentary, Mourinho maintained his stance that Carneiro and head physiotherapist Jon Fearn were incorrect to enter the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during a 2-2 draw against Swansea City.
The incident occurred when Mourinho launched a furious on-pitch tirade against the medical staff. Their decision to assist Hazard left Chelsea with only nine players on the field, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had already been issued a red card. In the documentary, Terry supported the manager’s version of events, claiming there was an “understanding” that medical staff should only intervene for clearly severe injuries.
Carneiro, who previously appeared to mock Mourinho after a clip from the series went viral, issued a stinging response to the claims. She also shared a statement from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine, which emphasized that medical staff have a professional duty of care to assess a player whenever requested by the referee. Regarding the involvement of the former Chelsea captain, she remarked, “Hope they made some money.”
Following the Swansea match, both Carneiro and Fearn were removed from their first-team duties. Carneiro left the club the following month and subsequently initiated legal action against Chelsea, eventually securing a £5 million settlement. While Chelsea has since issued an apology to the doctor, Mourinho has consistently refused to do so.
The documentary also addressed allegations of discrimination. In September 2015, the Football Association cleared Mourinho of making discriminatory remarks toward Carneiro during the altercation. In the series, the Portuguese manager rejected the claims entirely, insisting that he treated Carneiro no differently than he would have treated a male doctor. Despite his defense, the footage of the incident, which captured Mourinho directing a barrage of expletives at the medical duo, remains a focal point of the controversy.
