A woman accusing Russell Brand of rape has testified at Southwark Crown Court, describing the moment she allegedly faced an assault at a London bar. In a 2023 video interview presented to the jury, the woman recounted how she had been speaking with Brand about his role hosting the Channel 4 programme Big Brother’s Big Mouth when he allegedly grabbed her breasts and later forced her into a restroom. She has accused Brand of grabbing her breasts at the bar in Soho in London in 2004 before dragging her into a toilet and allegedly raping her.
The complainant, who was in her 20s at the time of the 2004 incident, told the court that she recalled Brand wearing a “big weird grin” that she compared to a clown during the encounter.
She testified that he pulled her into a flooded restroom, where the alleged rape occurred. The pair had been attending a birthday party when the alleged incidents happened. The woman told the prosecution barrister that she didn’t even know at the time that the alleged oral attack would be legally considered as rape.
She described the assault as “swift” and stated it left her in a state of shock and disbelief. She recalled telling him she did not want to proceed with the encounter, stating, “I just closed my eyes and tried not to be there. I just remember it felt like a force.” I would be ostracised in my work environment or friends. According to she, She did not agree because he had been holding her quite strongly, saying “part of me was saying just get it over with so you can get out of here”.
According to her testimony, after the incident, Brand allegedly turned to her and suggested they exchange numbers, an act she described as behaving as though everything was normal. She explained that she felt numb and ashamed in the aftermath. The woman added that she initially kept the event to herself, only later confiding in a friend that Brand had “tried to do it,” withholding at the time that he had succeeded.
Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges brought against him, which include three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault. These allegations, involving six separate complainants, cover a period between 1999 and 2009. The defendant maintains that any sexual contact that may have occurred was consensual. Made by six female complainants, span a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009, the allegations.
During cross-examination, Brand’s barrister, Ian Winter KC, suggested that the two had gone to the restroom consensually for a private moment, but abandoned the encounter due to the poor condition of the facilities. The woman, who became tearful while giving her account, rejected this characterization. She pushed back against suggestions that it would have been easy for her to struggle or escape, noting that Brand held her firmly and that she felt pressure to simply “get it over with” to leave the situation.
The witness explained that she waited two decades to report the matter to the police, citing fear and the social atmosphere of the 2000s. She stated that the pervasive “lad culture” of that era often resulted in victims not being believed and facing victim-blaming rhetoric. Furthermore, she noted that Brand’s celebrity status at the time made her fear that her career or reputation would be jeopardized if she spoke out, as she worked for MTV and was often surrounded by high-profile figures. The trial is currently ongoing and is anticipated to last for approximately six weeks. As the legal proceedings continue, the jury is examining evidence from the various complainants regarding their interactions with the entertainer during that decade.
