Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has called on his squad to sharpen their batting approach, specifically targeting dot-ball percentages and overall strike rates ahead of their upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The series, which begins in Sharjah on October 27, serves as a crucial development opportunity following a difficult series against India, where the team struggled to meet expectations. We need to look at our dot ball average and we’ve got to look at strike rates,” he said, adding that the series against India, despite the defeats, had helped him identify areas that needed attention. “For us as a side which is still in its developmental process as a team it (playing against India) has been an opportunity for me to be able to benchmark where we are against a side which is across formats if it’s not.

Statistical analysis from the past year reveals that Afghanistan has maintained a 43 percent dot-ball rate in T20Is, alongside a strike rate of 136.4. Pybus emphasized that while the team possesses high-quality power hitters and all-rounders, they must refine the nuance of their batting to ensure a more consistent flow of runs. He described the recent series against India as a valuable benchmarking exercise, noting that facing the world champions—even in defeat—provided clear insights into the side’s current strengths and weaknesses. According to i think we’ve got to develop our batting and the nuance of our batting so that we can just keep the volume of runs flowing,” Pybus, Ahead of the T20Is against Zimbabwe. Number one it’s one of the top sides in the world. With that benchmarking it’s just being able to see what our strengths and weaknesses are and I think for me as a coach it couldn’t have been a better gift,” he said. “It really isn’t nice getting beaten that’s for sure but if you’re going to have an opportunity to be able to benchmark where your side is at against the world champions with them playing at home it was really a fantastic opportunity. According to we have a new captain Ibrahim and it was, dare I say it, a baptism of fire, you know, to go to India, play in Delhi in front of a packed house, and on a small ground on a perfect batting surface against the world champions,”, Pybus. “It doesn’t get any tougher than that and I have to acknowledge that he managed the side well and stayed cool under pressure.

The head coach also addressed the leadership transition of new T20I captain Ibrahim Zadran.

Acknowledging the challenge of leading the side in India, Pybus praised Zadran’s ability to remain composed under intense pressure. Although the opener faced difficulties with the bat during the series, Pybus remains confident in his growth. He highlighted that Zadran’s leadership style is rooted in his calm demeanor and the authority of his performance, noting that more consistent exposure to the role will help him settle into the position effectively. According to pybus, however,, He was impressed with the way Ibrahim handled the responsibility in India and was not concerned about the opener’s returns with the bat after taking over the captaincy.

Pybus dismissed rumors of discord regarding the change in captaincy, specifically addressing speculation that former skipper Rashid Khan was dissatisfied. He characterized Rashid as a model professional who has offered his full support to Zadran. According to the coach, the relationship between the two remains strong, with Rashid providing consistent strategic input and sharing his deep game awareness in the dressing room.

As the team moves into the series against Zimbabwe, the focus remains on transforming these identified technical deficiencies into competitive advantages. Pybus views the developmental process as a priority, emphasizing that the team’s ongoing progress relies on adapting to high-pressure environments while maintaining technical discipline at the crease.
