The football community is mourning the loss of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who has passed away following a mid-match collision during a Spanish second-division fixture. The incident occurred on Monday at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez as Tenerife played to a 2-2 draw against visiting Andorra.

With seven minutes of stoppage time remaining, a clearance from the Tenerife penalty area bounced toward midfield, leading to a challenge between the 30-year-old De Miguel and Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. During the clash, Owono’s knee appeared to strike De Miguel in the chest. Following the impact, the referee issued a red card to the goalkeeper as medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to provide urgent assistance. Where the 30-year-old, who had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute with his side leading 2-0, was challenged by Andorra goalkeeper, the ball was cleared from the Tenerife penalty area and bounced towards midfield.

The match was subsequently abandoned while players visibly struggled with the unfolding situation. Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was admitted to intensive care. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness.

On Tuesday morning, Tenerife issued a solemn statement, expressing that they were broken with pain and unable to believe the reality of the tragedy. The club added, “We are with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with all the people of Tenerife who today mourn this cruel outcome.” The statement also noted that the family is grateful for the support received but has requested privacy “in these terrible moments.”

De Miguel, who was born in Madrid, had a professional career that began in 2015 with Leganes B before he went on to play for eight other Spanish clubs. He moved to Tenerife on a three-year contract in 2025. This followed a notable professional debut with Castellon in August 2024 at age 27, where he scored 16 goals to help his team earn promotion to the second division during the 2023-2024 campaign.
