Ainsley Maitland-Niles declines taking the knee against Chelsea

Everton defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles opted not to participate in the pre-match kneeling gesture prior to his side’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. While his teammates and the match officials knelt to show support, television cameras showed the Everton player remaining standing.

This act was part of the Premier League’s ongoing ‘No Room For Racism’ initiative. The league has dedicated all matches scheduled between 17 and 25 October to this cause, aiming to emphasize a collective commitment to eliminating discrimination within the sport. The ‘No Room For Racism’ campaign was first introduced by the English top flight in 2019 and typically features across two rounds of fixtures annually, held in October and April.

Although the specific motivation for Maitland-Niles’ decision remains unclear, his stance reflects a growing trend among some players who have expressed that the gesture has diminished in effectiveness over time. Previous players, including Ivan Toney and Wilfried Zaha, have distanced themselves from the tradition in the past. In 2021, Toney remarked on the matter during a talkSPORT 2 broadcast, and that same year, the Brentford squad issued a formal statement declaring they would cease taking the knee before kick-off. But a number of players have publicly claimed that the move has lost its value, it is unclear why Maitland-Niles refused to take part in the anti-racism gesture.

Despite these individual and collective departures from the practice, the Premier League maintains that its stance against prejudice is firm. Earlier this week, league CEO Richard Masters reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to combating racism, stressing that the campaign remains a central pillar of the league’s social agenda.
