“This is her stage!” Amy Hunt charged to 200m glory in Birmingham, securing her second gold medal of the European Athletics Championships. The 24-year-old, who previously won 100m gold on Monday, finished with a season’s best time of 22.19 seconds.
Hunt reeled in rival and compatriot Dina Asher-Smith down the back straight. She delivered a composed performance, steaming through the final 40m to clinch the title. As she crossed the line, she held her arms aloft and pointed to the sky, emulating Asher-Smith’s 100m-200m European double from 2018.
Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke claimed the silver medal, setting a new national record and pipping Asher-Smith to the second spot. Hunt, who previously won world 200m silver in Tokyo, had struggled in the event earlier this summer but promised a “renewal of our vows” before the tournament.
“Two out of four baby,” Hunt said TV. “This is becoming a magical week and one I will remember for the rest of my life.”
With the women’s and mixed 4x100m relay events remaining, Hunt remains on track to become the first athlete to win four European gold medals in a single tournament, staying focused on her goal “to be iconic.”
