Bayern Munich secured a comfortable 6-1 victory over second-tier side Magdeburg on Wednesday, advancing into the next round of the German Cup. The win comes during a momentous week for the club, which celebrated Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane alongside the positive news regarding manager Vincent Kompany’s health. His assistant, Danks, has been in charge of the team since then and was on the bench for Sunday’s 3-1 win at Freiburg.

Newly crowned as the world’s top individual performer on Monday, Kane was given a guard of honour by teammates and staff at the Allianz Arena before kickoff. As the first English recipient of the award since 2001, and the first player at a German club to claim the honour since 1996, the England captain waved to fans but remained an unused substitute as the coaching staff managed his fitness ahead of a dense upcoming schedule. Who was also the first Bayern player to win the Ballon d’Or in 45 years and the first at a German club to do so since 1996, was given a guard of honour before the match and waved to the adoring home, the England captain. On Monday, Kane became the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the prestigious award, football’s top individual honour, and was rested two days later as his club managed his workload in advance of a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks continued to lead from the bench for the second consecutive match. Bayern’s performance was clinical, highlighted by a brace from Michael Olise. Ismael Saibari added a goal, while second-half strikes from Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown widened the lead. Teenager David Santos Daiber concluded the scoring in stoppage time. Either side of Ismael Saibari’s goal, the 33-year-old striker remained on the bench throughout Wednesday’s fixture in which Michael Olise scored twice.

Although Bayern lead the Bundesliga, they faced a brief test in the first half when Magdeburg equalised and struck the post. The visitors were unable to maintain that intensity after the interval as the Munich side asserted dominance.

Significant relief arrived off the pitch regarding Vincent Kompany. Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, confirmed that the manager was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday following a medical emergency last Friday. Kompany had collapsed during a training session after struggling with a virus, necessitating urgent care.

Regarding the manager’s recovery, Eberl told broadcaster ARD, “Given the circumstances, he’s doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.” The club explained that the collapse was caused by meningeal irritation. Kompany is now expected to rest and undergo a medication regimen. And I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent.”, he will now rest and take medication.

While no specific return date has been established, Eberl expressed confidence that the Belgian coach would soon be operating at full capacity on the sidelines. He maintained that Kompany will only resume his professional duties once he receives full medical clearance.

Looking ahead, Bayern prepares for a pivotal Saturday fixture against Borussia Dortmund. The two clubs are currently level on points at the top of the Bundesliga table. Following the Klassiker, the team is set to travel to Spain for a Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid next week.
