Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal announced his resignation on Thursday following a distressing incident during his team’s 1-1 Champions League draw against Roma. During the match, a spectator threw a water bottle that struck the 65-year-old coach in the head. In the immediate aftermath, Kartal addressed a news conference, stating he was stepping down “never to return” and that the decision was made “to clear the way for the club.”
However, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim swiftly intervened, rejecting the resignation and confirming that Kartal “continues in his role.” Yildirim noted that the coach was understandably upset by the assault and the mounting pressure he has faced. When questioned about whether Kartal had personally agreed to remain, Yildirim dismissed the need for a formal confirmation, stating, “I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family.”
The Istanbul-based club confirmed via social media that the individual responsible for throwing the bottle has been identified and subsequently banned from the stadium. This incident occurred during a significant season for the club, which has reached the Champions League league phase for the first time in 18 years, following five consecutive second-place finishes in the Turkish top flight.
Kartal’s history with Fenerbahce is extensive, spanning a decade as a player and multiple coaching stints. He managed the team during the 2014-15 season, served as an interim coach in 2021-22, and led a full campaign in 2023-24. Having previously served as an assistant manager during the club’s last two Super Lig title-winning seasons, Kartal returned for his fourth managerial spell this past June.
