Harry Kane has made history by becoming the first English player to claim the prestigious Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker was officially recognized as the world’s best player during a ceremony held in London. Anything is possible’ – Kane wins Ballon d’Or.

This achievement cements Kane’s status as a generational talent, making him the fifth English winner in the history of the award.

He joins an elite list of predecessors including Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural trophy in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, and Kevin Keegan, who secured consecutive titles in 1978 and 1979. Other distinguished winners from the United Kingdom include Scotland’s Denis Law and Northern Ireland’s George Best. Denis Law of Scotland (1964) and Northern Ireland’s George Best (1968) are the other winners from the United Kingdom.

Reflecting on his journey, Kane expressed surprise at his own ascent during an interview with Dazn. He noted that he was never considered a superstar early in his career, emphasizing that his success is the product of intense self-belief, hard work, and resilience through various setbacks. He added that remaining grounded has been essential to his continued development at the highest level of the sport. And maybe even I wouldn’t have thought I’d be this far,” Kane told Dazn, not many people would have thought it. I was never the person that people thought was going to be the superstar like some of the guys now. A lot of times it was me against my own mind and I had to come through it, I had to show self-belief, determination, i had to bide my time and work hard.

Kane’s recognition follows a staggering campaign where he scored 61 goals in 51 club matches—a new record for a Bayern Munich player. When factoring in his England performances, his total output rose to 73 goals and eight assists in 65 games. Notably, he is the first Bayern Munich representative to receive this honor since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.

Despite his individual brilliance, the victory remains unique as he did not secure a major trophy last season, falling in the semi-finals of both the World Cup and the Champions League. Finishing behind him in the voting were Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. While Barcelona and Spain attacker Lamine Yamal completed the top three, real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappe finished second.

The sporting world has celebrated the striker’s achievement, with England manager Thomas Tuchel describing the accolade as a huge honor. Prince William also offered his praise, labeling the former Tottenham forward a brilliant captain and a remarkable player. To mark the occasion, the Wembley Stadium arches were illuminated in gold on Monday night.
