Is Lamine Yamal Outperforming Messi and Mbappe at Age

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal continues to put together remarkable statistics during an explosive start to the season. Splitting defences down the right flank, the 19-year-old recently produced a player of the match display capped by two assists in three minutes, cementing his place among football’s most impactful young talents.

Yamal initially made his professional debut as a 16-year-old during the 2023-24 season. However, his extraordinary consistency across the past eight weeks for both club and country has sparked comparisons to iconic prodigies. In his first 10 matches across all competitions for Barcelona this season, the Spanish international has tallied eight goals and nine assists, reaching 17 total goal contributions.

That mark edges out the early teenage output of Barcelona legend Lionel Messi. In the 2008-09 season—when Messi captured his first Ballon d’Or as a 19-year-old—the Argentine recorded 14 goal contributions, consisting of eight goals and six assists. Yamal has openly expressed his desire to win the prestigious trophy in 11 days, though he faces stiff competition from Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and England captain Harry Kane.

Mbappe, who spearheads the attack for Barcelona’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, boasts historic numbers of his own. Although Real Madrid have not claimed the Champions League trophy since winning their 15th title in the 2023-24 season, Mbappe led them to a victory over Italian side Inter Milan in their opening match last month. Before moving to Spain in 2024, Mbappe delivered prolific goalscoring output for Paris Saint-Germain after joining them as an 18-year-old in 2017. As a 19-year-old at PSG, Mbappe registered 12 goals and four assists over his opening 10 games, putting his 16 goal contributions just one behind Yamal’s current tally. He joined the club as an 18-year-old in 2017 and enjoyed great success a year later.

While direct comparisons between Yamal’s nascent career and Messi’s complete legacy are premature, the Spanish teenager continues to match rare milestones. Both players share the distinction of scoring double braces across their opening five La Liga fixtures. Messi achieved that feat as a 25-year-old during the 2012-13 campaign, whereas Yamal accomplished it this season.

Their intertwined story extends back to April 2007, three months before Yamal was born, when Messi scored his iconic solo goal against Getafe by dribbling past five players from his own half. Shortly after Yamal’s birth, a 20-year-old Messi posed with the five-month-old infant for a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot at the Camp Nou—an image that recently went viral after fans initially mistook it for AI generation. At first, many thought it was an AI-generated image, but it’s indeed real and dates back to 2007.

Nineteen years after that meeting, the two starred on opposite sides during the World Cup final on July 19 in New York. Likened to a master versus apprentice showdown between 39-year-old Messi and 19-year-old Yamal, the match concluded with Yamal’s Spain lifting the trophy as a tearful Messi embraced his successor. Yamal later revealed his exact words to Messi on the pitch, telling a British newspaper, “I said thank you for everything you gave football.” With the Argentinian walking away in tears as Yamal’s Spain lifted the trophy, but not before they exchanged a warm embrace, the two Barcelona stars faced off in the World Cup final on July 19.

Today, Yamal is rapidly chasing Messi’s club milestones, including the age at which each player reached 150 appearances for Barcelona. Yamal’s individual scoring pace has even outstripped whole teams in La Liga this season, with his seven league goals surpassing the total team tallies of Valencia (6), Getafe (4), and Malaga (4).

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick lauded his number 10 following a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in Istanbul. “When you see the chances Lamine creates in every training session, it’s the same in matches. I have a lot of top-quality players. Everyone’s watching Lamine – that’s only natural,” Flick noted, adding, “It’s incredible to have players like that; he’s turned the game around for us.”
