Jaguar Debuts Electric Type 01 Following Controversial Rebranding

Jaguar has unveiled its new all-electric Type 01 in New York, a high-stakes release that arrives two years after a turbulent relaunch of the storied automotive brand. The new model, an imposing four-door Grand Tourer, features a long bonnet designed to evoke the classic 1960s E-Type. As the first of three planned electric vehicles, the Type 01 serves as a centerpiece for JLR’s ambitious strategy to reinvent the manufacturer as a luxury electric marque. Which has invested billions reinventing Jaguar, despite the risk of collateral damage from the culture wars, but it marks a gamble for JLR. And for good reason, but in this case the attention has been much greater.

The launch arrives after a period of intense public scrutiny following a 2024 rebranding campaign that many critics labeled as woke. The initial rollout featured surreal advertising without any vehicles shown, followed by a Miami event where designers introduced radical concept cars in vibrant London Blue and Miami Pink. The aesthetic choices triggered a widespread social media and press backlash, with observers deriding the bright pink coloring as Barbie pink and accusing the company of abandoning its heritage. Showing models in a range of bizarre and brightly coloured outfits, the first step was a surreal advert. Two weeks later, Jaguar’s denim-clad design chief Gerry McGovern took to a Miami stage to unveil a pair of radical concept cars, resplendent in Miami Pink and London Blue colour schemes. “Jaguar has no desire to be loved by everybody,” he quipped.

Under the surface of the controversy, JLR has been executing a long-term plan backed by a 15 billion pound investment in new technologies and models. Analysts note that Jaguar had previously lost its standing among luxury buyers, struggling to compete with brands like Audi and BMW. Matthias Schmidt of Schmidt Automotive Research suggested that the uproar, while uncomfortable for leadership, at least maintained public awareness for a brand that had been fading from the market.

Technically, the Type 01 represents a massive leap for the company. JLR describes it as the most powerful, aerodynamic, and advanced vehicle it has ever engineered. It is equipped with electric motors capable of producing approximately 1,000 horsepower, enabling a 0-62mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds. The company also reports a range of up to 320 miles at sustained highway speeds. Producing about 1000 horsepower and allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, the new model’s electric motors are potent.

Despite these specifications, the vehicle enters a fiercely competitive luxury segment with a starting price of 130,000 pounds. It must now contend with established high-end rivals such as Porsche and Mercedes-AMG, as well as fast-growing competitors like Denza. The release coincides with significant organizational changes, including the departure of design chief Gerry McGovern, the termination of the agency responsible for the controversial rebranding, and the appointment of a new chief executive. However, it comes at a hefty price tag, with a minimum cost of £130,000.

Industry experts remain divided on whether the vehicle can succeed. Automotive journalist Steve Fowler characterized the launch as a last throw of the dice for a company that has historically struggled to generate significant profit from its Jaguar division. He noted that while the car itself is objectively impressive, the lingering question is whether the Jaguar brand retains enough prestige to attract high-end buyers.

Ginny Buckley, from the website Electrifying.com, encouraged the public to move past the previous culture wars and focus on the product’s quality. She believes the vehicle is substantial enough to silence skeptics, though she acknowledged that the primary hurdle remains convincing customers to commit to the purchase. Ultimately, as the brand moves into this electric future, it must prove that its radical departure from tradition has yielded a product that is truly extraordinary.
