Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will miss the final two ODIs against South Africa after sustaining a fracture to his right index finger. The injury occurred during the opening match of the series in Durban. Despite the pain, Inglis managed to continue keeping throughout the contest and also contributed 3 runs from 8 balls while batting at No. 4 during Australia’s unsuccessful chase. Australia ultimately lost that match by 67 runs, leaving them trailing 0-1 in the three-game series. But carried on keeping and even batted in the chase, scoring 3 off 8 from No.4, inglis broke his right index finger while keeping in the first ODI in Durban.
The severity of the fracture has officially sidelined Inglis for the upcoming matches in Johannesburg on September 27 and Potchefstroom on September 30. Cricket Australia confirmed that the player will travel home to Perth to undergo medical scans. His participation in the Test series, which begins in Durban on October 9, remains uncertain and will depend on further assessment and his rate of recovery. While Alex Carey is the primary wicketkeeper in the Test squad, Inglis could feature as a specialist batter if he recovers in time. No replacement for Inglis has been named for the remaining two ODIs, though Australia may need to re-evaluate their squad options for the Test series should he remain unavailable.
