US rap star Kanye West’s two planned concerts in Russia have been cancelled, organisers said Wednesday, less than two months after their surprise announcement triggered a frenzy of media attention and excitement among Russians. The Grammy-award winning rapper would have been the biggest Western musician to headline in Russia since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive in 2022. Moscow-based events organiser Say Agency stated: “Friends, it is with sincere regret that we announce that the YE concerts in Saint Petersburg cannot take place on the scheduled dates.”
Context of the Cancellation
- The organisers did not provide a specific reason for the cancellation of the performances.
- West, known as “Ye,” has previously faced travel barriers in several European nations due to his history of antisemitic remarks.
- The initial venue in Saint Petersburg withdrew days after tickets were released, creating prolonged uncertainty for fans.
- Russian officials were divided, with some welcoming the performances while others raised concerns over the rapper’s past comments glorifying Nazi Germany.
- The Kommersant newspaper reported on Wednesday that police are currently investigating the event organisers for alleged fraud, citing an unnamed source.
