Starting 26 September, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) will host an exhibition featuring works from the four artists shortlisted for this year’s Turner Prize. The collection, which includes sculpture, mixed media, and spoken word, marks a significant cultural moment for the region as the gallery prepares to welcome visitors to view these nationally recognized projects. Work by four artists in the running for the prize – Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku – will go on display at Teesside University’s Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) from 26 Sept.
Dr. Laura Sillars, the director of MIMA and dean of culture and creativity at Teesside University, described the arrival of the exhibition as a “prestigious opportunity.” She noted that during the time the works are displayed, the gallery effectively serves as a “centre of the creative universe.”
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the potential impact on the local community. He stated that the exhibition offers residents an “incredible opportunity” to engage with cutting-edge art without leaving their home town. Cooke added that he hopes the display inspires young people to consider their own future potential, asking why local residents could not be the ones nominated for the award in the coming years. Furthermore, he emphasized that hosting the event allows the town to showcase its offerings to a national audience.
Founded in 1984, the Turner Prize is named after the renowned English Romantic painter Joseph Mallord William Turner and remains one of the most prominent accolades in the visual arts. The prize is awarded annually to a British artist in recognition of an outstanding exhibition or creative presentation.
The winner of the 2026 competition will be revealed on 10 December. The successful artist is set to receive a £25,000 prize, while the remaining three shortlisted nominees will each be awarded £10,000.
