Sri Lanka omit Charith Asalanka for upcoming ODI tri-series

Sri Lanka has confirmed its squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, marked by the omission of former vice-captain Charith Asalanka. Asalanka, who maintains a career average of 40.55 in 88 ODIs, struggled during the recent one-day leg of the England tour, managing scores of only 1, 11 and 7. His exclusion follows his prior omission from the T20I squad for the three-match series against Pakistan that precedes this event. During the England tour, Asalanka served as vice-captain and even led the side for T20Is after Kusal Mendis failed to recover in time from a hamstring injury. Asalanka’s exclusion follows his omission from Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the 3-match series against Pakistan that precedes the tri-series.

Squad changes and recalls

Selectors have recalled batter Avishka Fernando and all-rounder Sahan Arachchige to the roster. This duo directly replaces Asalanka and spinner Wanindu Hasaranga in the lineup. Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during the England tour, and otherwise, the squad remains unchanged from the group that conceded the ODI series to England by a 2-1 margin. Fernando earns his spot following exceptional domestic form, having scored 447 runs in seven innings at an average of 63.85 during the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament.

Fitness concerns for key players

  • Pathum Nissanka: Currently ruled out of the T20Is, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed he will travel to Pakistan only if he is declared “medically fit”.
  • Dushmantha Chameera: Retained as a conditional pick in the T20I squad, subject to receiving official fitness clearance.

Series schedule and venue details

The tri-series is set to begin on October 18, featuring an opening clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. After completing the initial round of matches in Rawalpindi, the teams will relocate to Lahore for the second round of group fixtures, leading up to the scheduled final on October 31.
