Tony Romo is stepping down from his analyst position at CBS Sports, concluding a nine-year tenure as one of the network’s lead voices for NFL broadcasts. This professional separation follows the former Dallas Cowboys star’s July arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. In a public statement, the network confirmed that the parties have mutually agreed to part ways, adding that they appreciate his contributions over the past decade and wish him the best in his future endeavors.
The incident marked a significant departure from Romo’s established public profile as a clean-cut, approachable football personality. Last month, he entered a plea of no contest to a civil offense related to the arrest. Reflecting on the circumstances during his legal proceedings, Romo disclosed that he had begun turning to alcohol as a way to manage lingering physical pain resulting from his professional football career. He emphasized that he intended to apply the discipline he learned on the field to navigate the fallout from the arrest and determine his next steps.
Addressing his exit, Romo expressed pride in the work he accomplished while at CBS, noting that he treated his broadcasting role with the same competitive intensity he brought to his time in the league. He stated that he is currently taking a rare break from his career to prioritize his health and family life. “I am going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity,” Romo said, adding his gratitude for the support received from the NFL community, fans, and his close circle.
In a personal reflection regarding his recovery, Romo acknowledged that the past month has been a difficult but significant period, requiring him to take full ownership of his mistakes before himself, his family, and the public. He confirmed that he is collaborating with a team of medical professionals to manage his health and implement necessary lifestyle adjustments. He noted that the ongoing encouragement from coaches, players, and owners has been deeply impactful as he works toward moving forward. To myself, to my family, and now to the public,” he wrote, it has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully—to the Lord. “I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes.
